Temporary Traffic Restrictions: A38 Flyover and Gloucester Road North

South Gloucestershire Council has announced temporary traffic restrictions, including road closures, turning prohibitions, and parking restrictions, affecting the A38 flyover and surrounding slip roads.

Reason for Works

These temporary measures are required to safely facilitate essential highway maintenance. The works include retaining wall concrete repairs, maintenance of the A38 flyover expansion joints, and road resurfacing.

Key Dates and Road Closures

The restrictions came into effect on 16 February 2026 and will last for a maximum of 18 months, though they will only be enforced when relevant traffic signs are displayed. Scheduled closures include:

A38 Flyover (Hayes Way to Northway): Closed from 20 July 2026 to 25 July 2026.

Gloucester Road North, Filton: The southbound on-slip road will be closed for its entire length from 28 August 2026 to 31 August 2026.

Gloucester Road, Patchway: The northbound on-slip road will be closed for its entire length from 18 September 2026 to 21 September 2026.

Turning and Waiting Restrictions

During the works, additional restrictions will apply:

No Waiting: Waiting is prohibited at all times on the southbound exit slip road (from Gipsy Patch Lane to the B4057) between 16 February 2026 and 18 July 2026.

No Right Turns: Prohibited from the northbound and southbound exit slip roads under the flyover onto Gloucester Road (Patchway), Gipsy Patch Lane, and the Gloucester Road northbound slip.

No Left Turns: Prohibited from the Royal Mail Entrance onto the A38 Gloucester Road and Gloucester Road.

Alternative Routes

Signed diversion routes will be in place during these closures. Depending on your direction of travel, alternative routes will direct traffic via Hayes Way, the A38, and the Filton Roundabout.

Temporary Traffic Restrictions on A38 Gloucester Road (Filton & Patchway)

South Gloucestershire Council advises all road users of upcoming temporary traffic restrictions, including road closures, turning bans, and parking suspensions, along the A38 Gloucester Road North and surrounding slip roads.

Why is this happening?

These measures are required to ensure public safety while essential highway maintenance takes place. Contractors will be carrying out concrete repairs to retaining walls, maintaining the A38 flyover expansion joints, and resurfacing the road.

Please note that these restrictions are part of an 18-month order beginning in February 2026, but will only be enforced when official traffic signs are displayed at the locations.

Temporary 20mph Speed Limit: A38 Gloucester Road, Patchway & Filton

South Gloucestershire Council is introducing a temporary 20mph speed limit on the A38 Gloucester Road and A38 Gloucester Road North, covering the full length of the flyover between Patchway and Filton.

The restriction is needed to protect public safety while bridge repair works take place on the flyover.

Key details

  • Location: A38 Gloucester Road / A38 Gloucester Road North, from a point 75 metres south of the Hayes Way junction, running south for 415 metres (the full flyover section)
  • Speed limit: 20mph (temporarily suspending the existing 40mph limit on this stretch)
  • Order starts: 25 July 2026
  • Order in force for: up to 18 months
  • Works expected to last: approximately 2 months

The 20mph limit will only apply when temporary traffic signs are in place, and only for as long as the works require. The wider 18-month order period gives the council flexibility, but the actual speed restriction is expected to be active for around two months while the bridge repairs are carried out.

This order is made under section 14 of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984.
