The Filton Community Garden Project
The Community Garden project commenced in 2012 with a simple idea of creating a space and focal point for the community to come together to not only enjoy relaxing and playing in but also be part of its creation.
Now two years on the garden has become much loved part of the community and has won a number of awards from national bodies including the RHS who described it as the best garden of its type and a benchmark for others.
The Chairman’s report below details the progress so far and aspirations for the future.
Report of Chair – November 2014
My first year as chair seems to have flown by and as a garden committee I feel that we have now made the garden a much valued community asset.
If the first year was establishing the garden then this year was about adding a bit more finesse, we have had the opportunity build on the solid groundwork and planning which went into creating the garden. When I started looking at what we have done this year I just could not believe what we have achieved in just 12 months we now have a much needed water supply, a fernery, borders around our boundaries, what a wonderful day we had with the UWE volunteers, an edible bed which flourished during the summer months, a bug house which brings so much enjoyment to the children. The schools are now involved and what a delight their gardens are, it is so nice seeing young people getting involved. We have our own noticeboard letting the public know what we are about.Of course all these supplement the wonderful flower beds which have supplied such wonderful colours throughout the year, we are privileged to have some knowledgeable and gifted gardeners amongst us.Once again we showcased the garden during the Filton Festival, the theme this year was to give back to the community in recognition of the support they have given to us. What an absolute triumph it was, thoroughly enjoyed by those who attended. Children and adults were entertained by the Punch and Judy and a whole host of other activities, bug hunt, garden quiz, origami, garden on a plate competition all of which were financed by the raffle and plant sale with money to spare. In September we hosted the Macmillan Cake and Coffee event which again was a huge success raising almost £300 for a thoroughly worthwhile cause. As I write this report thoughts are still with Armistice Day, what a wonderful job we did in honouring those who fought so bravely for our freedom. The two knitted Poppy displays were fantastic and I believe have brought the Filton Community together. With the accolades we received from the RHS following their assessment we can undoubtedly say that Filton Community Garden is an award winning garden. So what about the future have we gone as far as we can, I think not, in the next twelve months we will be planting up our wildflower bank, making substantial progress with the bandstand and I am sure many other projects as the one thing this group does not lack is ideas.
To end I would like to thank you all for the support you have given me during my year as Chair, you really are an incredible group of people who achieved so much in such little time.
